On the 29th of May 2025, Lovedale TVET College—one of South Africa’s Centres of Vocational Excellence (CoVE SA Hubs) under the EU-funded Erasmus+ program—hosted a transformative workshop aimed at equipping emerging farmers with essential computer literacy and business development skills. The workshop brought together local farmers, facilitators, and key stakeholders for a day of learning, empowerment, and connection.
The event featured four dynamic presentation sessions, each playing a vital role in helping farmers navigate the increasingly digital and entrepreneurial landscape of agriculture. One of the standout moments of the day was the computer training session, which marked a significant milestone for many of the attendees. For most of our farmers, it was their first formal introduction to basic computing. The session covered the fundamentals of hardware systems and Microsoft Office tools. Importantly, it was hands-on—farmers practiced directly on computers, learning by doing. This practical approach fostered confidence and excitement among participants as they realized how accessible and useful technology can be in improving their operations.
The second session introduced farmers to the power of digital farming, with a special focus on AI tools for drafting business plans. The demonstration of AI-generated business plans left many in awe, as they witnessed how technology can significantly reduce the time and effort needed to produce professional-quality documents. This tool, they learned, could be a game-changer in growing and formalizing their agri-business ventures.
In the third session, representatives from the Centre for Entrepreneurship Rapid Incubator (CFERI) shared insights into their initiative aimed at assisting college and university graduates in launching their own businesses. Funded by the Department of Small Business Development and implemented by the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA), this program opened new doors for our farmers, many of whom are just beginning their entrepreneurial journeys. It was both inspiring and informative to be part of a conversation that emphasized grassroots innovation and sustainable business development.
The final session of the day featured a highly informative online presentation by Mr. Somhlahlo, who discussed tax compliance and SARS registration. As tax literacy remains a significant hurdle for many small business owners, this session was particularly impactful. Mr. Somhlahlo highlighted the critical steps required to register a business with SARS and shared practical tips on staying compliant and managing follow-ups effectively.
Workshops like this are a testament to the power of community engagement and skill-building. Through programs like CoVE SA, supported by the European Union's Erasmus+ initiative, our farmers are not only gaining vital tools for business success but also the confidence to thrive in a digital economy. As we look to the future, continued collaboration and training will be key to unlocking the full potential of rural entrepreneurship in South Africa.
